Suitability
Who this may suit
- Children of any age are welcome, including very young children who simply come along to get used to the practice.
- Preventive measures such as fluoride application and fissure sealants are recommended case by case, following an examination.
- Where a child needs care we cannot provide comfortably in general practice, we discuss referral with you.
How we care for young patients
First visits at your child's pace
An early visit is often about familiarity rather than treatment — sitting in the chair, meeting the team and having a look at the teeth if your child is happy for us to. Many children come along to a parent's appointment first.
Prevention before repair
Our focus is on keeping teeth healthy: brushing and diet guidance, checking for early signs of decay, and preventive measures such as fluoride application or fissure sealants where your clinician judges them appropriate.
Watching teeth as they develop
We keep an eye on how baby and adult teeth are coming through, how the bite is developing and anything that may be worth reviewing or, if needed, referring on.

Early, and before there is a problem. Many families bring a young child along to a parent's appointment so the practice feels familiar, then book their own first visit when they are comfortable. Your clinician will advise on timings for your child rather than applying a fixed rule.
We meet you both, explain everything in child-friendly language, then check the teeth, gums, bite and how the teeth are developing, as far as your child is happy for us to. We finish with brushing and diet guidance, any preventive measures your clinician recommends, and a chat with you about what we found. X-rays are only taken when clinically justified.
Tell us in advance or when you arrive. We slow the appointment down, explain and show before doing anything, let your child set the pace and stop when they ask. A first visit may be nothing more than sitting in the chair and having a look — that is a good outcome, and it makes the next visit easier.
Brush twice a day, including last thing at night, and keep helping or supervising for longer than you might expect. Limit how often sugary food and drink are consumed rather than only the amount, keep sugary drinks away from bedtime, and bring your child to their check-ups so anything early is picked up. We will coach you both at the appointment.
What happens during an appointment
- 1
Welcome and settling in
You and your child are met by reception and shown into the surgery together. Tell us anything that helps — a previous difficult visit, a fear of noises, or something your child finds reassuring.
- 2
Talking before looking
The clinician introduces themselves, explains what they would like to do in words a child understands, and asks before starting. Nothing is done by surprise.
- 3
Looking at the teeth and gums
A check of the teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and how the teeth are developing. If your child is not ready for part of it, we do what we can and build on it next time.

Treatment choices we may discuss
First dental visit
A gentle introduction to the practice. We keep it short and positive, look at the teeth and gums as far as your child allows, and talk to you about brushing, diet and what to expect next.
Routine examination
A check of the teeth, gums and soft tissues, how the teeth are developing, and any early signs of decay or wear. X-rays are only taken when clinically justified.
Brushing and hygiene guidance
Practical, age-appropriate coaching on brushing technique, how much help your child still needs from you, and how to build a routine that sticks — for your child and for you.
Diet advice
Most decay in children is driven by how often sugary food and drink are consumed rather than the total amount. We look at the everyday pattern — snacks, squash, sports drinks, bedtime routines — and suggest realistic changes.
Fluoride application
Applying fluoride to the teeth can help strengthen enamel. It is used where your clinician judges it clinically appropriate for your child, and is discussed with you first.
Fissure sealants
A protective coating placed over the grooves of back teeth, which can be difficult to clean. Sealants are offered where your clinician considers them suitable; the fee is listed in our central fee list.
Important limitations
What this treatment cannot do
- We do not diagnose anything from a website. Advice on this page is general and does not replace an examination.
- How often your child should be seen is decided by their clinician after assessing their teeth, gums and risk of decay — we do not publish a fixed recall interval.
- Some treatment is easier once a child is a little older or more confident. If so, we will say that rather than press ahead.
Alternatives
Other options we may discuss
NHS care for children
Cobham Dental is a private practice. NHS dental care for children is available at NHS practices — you can find one through the NHS website if that suits your family better.
Pay as you go or membership
You can book individual appointments and pay as you go, or spread routine care over monthly payments with our children's membership plan.
If your child feels nervous
Please tell us — before or at the appointment. Knowing that your child is anxious, or has had a difficult experience before, changes how we plan the visit: we allow more time, explain everything first, let them look at and hold instruments, and stop whenever they ask us to. Sometimes the most useful first visit involves no treatment at all. Parents are welcome to stay throughout.
