The Cobham digital difference

Your smile, designed before it's placed

Digital planning with laboratory-guided precision: we combine 3D smile design, a bespoke laboratory-made stent and clinician finishing.

  1. Scan

    We scan

A precise 3D scan of your teeth is taken in practice.

  2. Design

    We design

Your proposed tooth shapes and proportions are designed digitally for your individual smile.

  3. Transfer

    The lab makes your stent

A bespoke stent is produced from that design, so the planned shapes can be transferred accurately using composite.

  4. Finish

    Your clinician finishes

The final contours, texture and polish are refined clinically by your dentist.

What digital design means for you

  • Planned proportions

Your proposed tooth shapes can be considered before any composite is placed.

  • Bespoke to your smile

The design is created for your individual teeth rather than from a generic shape.

  • Consistent transfer

The bespoke stent helps transfer the digitally planned shapes into the mouth.

  • Clinician finishing

Once the composite is transferred, contours, texture and polish are refined clinically.

Your five steps

How your bonding is designed and placed

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Consultation

We talk through what you would like to change, then assess your teeth, gums and bite to see whether composite bonding suits your case.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    3D digital scan

A precise 3D scan records your teeth and smile — no putty impressions unless your case genuinely needs one.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Your smile is designed

Your proposed tooth shapes and proportions are designed digitally for your own smile. That design is then used to produce a bespoke laboratory-made transfer stent.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Your bonding appointment

The bespoke stent is used to transfer the planned shapes in composite, and your clinician refines the teeth as your case requires.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Finish, polish and review

Final contours, texture and polish are refined by hand, and we review the result with you and explain how to look after it.

  6. A smile you saw designed first

Because the shapes are planned before treatment, you know the direction of your result before any composite is placed. Results still vary from person to person.

What can composite bonding change?

Composite bonding may be used to improve:

  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Worn or chipped edges
  • Tooth shape and proportion
  • Minor asymmetry

Not every concern is suitable for bonding. Suitability is assessed individually at consultation.

A conservative approach to changing your smile

Composite bonding can often improve tooth shape without the preparation associated with some indirect restorations. The exact amount of preparation, if any, depends on your individual teeth and treatment plan, and your dentist will explain it before you decide.
