How a referral works

  1. 1

    Submit the referral

Complete the referral form with the clinical details and any radiographs. Everything is submitted through the practice rather than by email.

  2. 2

    We review it

A clinician reviews the referral and the imaging supplied, and checks that the case is one we can appropriately accept.

  3. 3

    We contact the patient

Our team contacts the patient to arrange their appointment and explains what to expect and what it will cost before anything is booked.

  4. 4

    Assessment and treatment

The patient is assessed in practice. Where treatment is agreed, it is carried out here; where a case needs a hospital or specialist service, we say so and refer on.

  5. 5

    We report back to you

We write to you with the assessment, what was done and any recommendations for ongoing care with your practice.

Keeping you informed

We write to the referring practice after assessment and again once treatment is complete, using the professional email address given on the referral. If you would like a call to discuss a case before or after the appointment, say so on the form or ring the practice and we will arrange it. Patients remain under your care for routine dentistry unless you and the patient agree otherwise.

Referral information is used for the patient's clinical care only. It is not added to marketing lists.

Urgent referrals

If your patient needs to be seen urgently, telephone the practice during opening hours rather than relying on the referral form, and tell us what the clinical urgency is. We will tell you honestly whether we can see them within the timeframe needed. Patients with airway compromise, difficulty swallowing, spreading facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or facial trauma need emergency medical care and should be directed to A&E or 999 rather than referred to the practice.
